The study investigated parental factors affecting the retention of children in early childhood education centers (ECECs) in Buuri East sub –county, Meru, Kenya. The study adopted a mixed methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative data and key stakeholders such as teachers, center managers and County Ward administrators were targeted. The study findings showed that family size and number of children affected retention, with larger families, which often were resource poor, and therefore needed additional support to remain enrolled. The study also emphasized the importance of parental involvement, indicating that parents who maintained involvement had better retention rates. In addition, parental literacy levels were viewed as very important as more educated parents tended to value and support education for their children. The findings also reiterated the need to incorporate African traditions and values in the curriculum; provide enough funding; increase parental involvement and improve parental literacy.
