Infertility and Marriage Stability in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria

The study examined infertility and marriage stability in Port-Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State. As an approach to curb the negative cultural implications of infertility on married couples and also inculcates effective indicators or solutions to the problem of marriage stability. The study relied on feminist theory which aims to understand gender inequality and helps to promote gender equality. Methodologically, this study employed a qualitative approach to gather data. A sample size of 200 was selected, a combination of purposive and snowball sampling techniques was employed. In-depth interview was conducted with 200 single parents to gather qualitative data on their experiences, challenges, and coping strategies. The findings of the study suggest that infertility and marriage stability can be addressed through multifaceted approaches that include education and awareness, financial support, gender equality and empowerment, environmental protection, and support services. Also, the study revealed that the cultural implications of infertility on married couples in the study area, that in this culture, fertility is often viewed as a blessing from God and personal success for the couples, and childbearing is seen as a key aspect of marriage. Infertility, therefore, is viewed as a source of shame and stigma for couples. Moreover, the women are always blamed for being responsible for infertility in the study area, which contributes to stigmatization and marginalization. The study recommended that government should establish support groups and counseling services to reduce stress and anxiety among couples experiencing infertility, and promote open communication and problem-solving strategies.
