Integrating Social-Ecological Approaches for Sustainable Environmental Management: A Case Study of Mangrove Restoration in Nigeria

Environmental management has evolved from a purely technical discipline to an integrated field that recognizes the complex interdependencies between ecological systems and human communities. This paper examines the effectiveness of integrated environmental management approaches through a case study analysis of mangrove restoration efforts in Nigeria's Niger Delta, implemented through the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project. Employing a mixed-methods framework that combines quantitative biophysical assessments with qualitative community-based participatory research, the study evaluates restoration outcomes across 10 Communities spanning four Local Government Areas. Findings reveal that successful environmental management outcomes are contingent upon three critical factors: the integration of traditional ecological knowledge with scientific monitoring, the establishment of inclusive governance structures that empower local stakeholders, and the alignment of restoration objectives with tangible socio-economic benefits. The study demonstrates that mangrove restoration projects incorporating community participation and blue carbon valuation mechanisms achieve significantly higher success rates than those employing solely technical approaches. Furthermore, the research identifies policy gaps in Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions framework, which currently excludes mangroves from climate mitigation strategies despite their substantial carbon sequestration potential. The implications extend beyond Nigeria, offering a replicable model for environmental management in coastal ecosystems across West Africa and other regions facing similar governance and ecological challenges. This research contributes to the growing body of literature advocating for social-ecological systems thinking in environmental management, emphasizing that sustainable outcomes require bridging the gap between scientific expertise and community-based knowledge systems.
