Afroncentricism and Insecurity in Nigeria: Urgent need for Policy Review

Globally, insecurity remains a threat to humanity. Its presence anywhere is a concern to the world. Thus, as Big Brother, Nigeria has demonstrated her concerns for humanity and showed readiness to lead in the war against insecurity within African sub-region and beyond. Regrettably, such efforts are not employed internally in defense and protection of her citizens and territory even when faced with worse insecurity situations. The study Afroncentricism and insecurity in Nigeria: urgent need for policy review is therefore an attempt to x-ray Nigeria‟s foreign policy options amidst her growing internal insecurity. The study employed historical methods, relying on secondary data with Hegemonic Stability Theory as its analytical framework. The theory is anchored on the assumption that open or „liberal‟ international economic order requires the existence of hegemon or dominant power which retains support in the field. Findings revealed that Nigeria‟s state is currently facing internal threats ranging from Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, herders-farmers crisis, cattle hustling to ethnic militias among others. It further revealed how Nigeria's frightening level of insecurity make its citizens to live in constant fear; which has grounded her socio-economic development, and dented her international image and credibility. The study concluded that insecurity in Nigeria has come to stay as the current administration lacks the political will to contend and acumen to proffer lasting solutions to the menace and recommended among others for Citizen Diplomacy rather than Afrocentrism as the policy is citizen-oriented in its approach, objectives, and outcome.
