OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ORGANOPHOSPHATE TOXICITY

Organophosphates (Ops) are used worldwide as pesticides; however, there are growing concerns about Ops' toxicity and health implications. Due to organ phosphorus agents' lethality and the growing risk, they pose, medical interventions that prevent organophosphate toxicity are much needed. OP exerts its toxicity via acetyl cholinesterase inhibition; however, it does not account for the various disorders following OP exposure. Studies have shown oxidative stress as a co-lethal factor in OP-induced poisoning. Oxidative stress is the primary mechanism in the pathophysiology of several toxins and diseases. The main objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of oxidative stress and its role in organophosphate toxicity. Based on relevant literature, it is concluded that determining oxidative stress parameters and supplementation with natural or synthetic antioxidants may be beneficial in OP toxicity. However, more studies and trials are needed to explore the effectiveness of these antioxidants.
